Gratitude – A Principal’s Address –
I would like to thank a number of people who have contributed to the Western College over the years and who have assisted in making our school one of the premiere schools in Canada.
With limitless support and guiding thoughtfulness, my wife Susan has allowed me the ability to make the sacrifices necessary for the college to move forward. Every year my appreciation of time increases and I wish to thank her in all ways possible for her sacrifices which allow me to spend a large amount of time at something I truly believe in.
It has been said that pictures are worth a thousand words. How I feel about Susan makes a single word conjure a thousand pictures.
To Susan…..Love.
Due to his insight, enthusiasm and tolerance for risk, I would like to thank Mr. Randy Ellingson for creating the opportunity and momentum for me to take a leadership role here at Western. His time and effort directed towards the school and the field of massage has been an inspiration to me and many others. I will be forever grateful for his generosity and tutelage. I strive to not just maintain what he has built, but to reach farther using such a strong system of support. Working with Randy through the first decade of my involvement with the school has taught me much in the way of curriculum development and an awareness to professional representation of our school and it’s place in the public and health care communities. I will work to continue moving the school further along our chosen path in massage therapy education. Sometimes one feels so secure reaching for a dream; they forget they are on the shoulders of those who allow them a realistic chance at reaching so high. I will never forget.
To Mr Abe Riemer and Mr. Don Bennett, the founding fathers of Massage Therapy education in Saskatchewan. With collaboration with Mr Ken Woodward of the Northern Institute of Remedial Massage Therapies, Blackpool England, they together began offering programs in massage therapy. It is their initial inspiration and vision, on which our college rests upon. It is this strong foundation on which the success and reputation of our school progresses.
To my friend and colleague, Ron Taylor I hope to one day provide as much support and critical guidance as has been provided to me. Ron is responsible in a large way in ensuring I keep a clear view of what matters and keeping me ‘real’. And Ron, if I die first, I hope you’re left holding the “thing”.
My climbing partner and soul brother, Kevin Nielson has had a profound influence on the massage college even in only being here on a few brief occasions. I speculate my Austrian heritage has created a significant genetic attraction to the mountains. My trips there over the years have allowed for deep reflection in all aspects of my life, personal and professional. As the mountains are mirrors of one’s character, I have been able to learn more about myself and thus understand how to apply myself better in the operation of the massage college and be a more valuable contributor to our field.
Thank you Kevin for carrying me when I can’t walk. Climb on bro.
I will always be very grateful to my parents, sister and brother for creating the healthy, supportive and happy environment for me to grow into the person I have become. My mother Gertie and father George have taught me a work ethic which I rely on each day. I hope to make them as proud of my achievements as I am of being their son. My sister Sherry and her daughter Ashley have taught me more about overcoming adversity and living large than they will ever know. Every thing I have done and will do for them will pale in comparison for what they have given me. My brother Darrell has taught me many lessons along our long road of working side by side.
Sifu Lee Chi Wai showed me the path to my martial arts training which began in 1984. Now that I finally begin to understand the martial arts, I find I continue to train every day whether I kick punch or breathe. Through all of my athletic and recreational pursuits, I have yet to find anything that compares to the Kung Fu training I have done. Thank you Sifu, for teaching me to empty my cup.
My staff of Instructors and Administration is what makes today an adventure in pure joy. Waking up and going to the college is so pleasing I hesitate to term it what others will call work.
There have been numerous fellow instructors and many students who have all contributed to my understanding of massage therapy. It has been through this understanding that I am able to teach. Thank you also, to all my future students. I look forward to the lessons I have yet to learn.
To all of my friends and training partners, thanks for letting me catch up so many times and the occasional time you let me lead.
I have read that ‘gratitude’ is one of the purest and most rewarding feelings one can have. As I review this citation I am reminded on the truthfulness of this. To all…..Thank you.
